Reentry and aftercare programs are essential in helping juveniles adjust back into society and reduce recidivism rates. Many confined juveniles return to impoverished communities with high crime rates. Many youths are from unstable households, failing school systems, and higher unemployment rates. Juvenile offenders face other disparities, such as mental health and substance abuse issues. These issues increase the likelihood of recidivism without appropriate programs and support in place in their communities.
OJJDP reports that the youth reentry population is overwhelmingly male, a racial minority, and age 15 or older.
Reentry is not one specific program; it is a process. Youth transitioning from the DJJ system require wraparound services that will assist youths in successfully reintegrating into their communities as whole, productive, law-abiding citizens.
- Education- training communities and others on issues affecting youths.
- Advocacy- appealing to those who can make a difference (faith communities, families, community coalitions, legislators, corporations, etc.)
- Networking- connecting communities and individuals to information and service programs that can assist youth and their families.
