As of January 2020, Georgia had an estimated 10,234 experiencing homelessness on any given day. Of that Total, 864 were family households, and 504 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24). The 2018-2019 Public school data reported that during the school year estimated 38,891 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 642 students were unsheltered, 2,675 were in shelters, 7,632 were inhotels/motels, and 27,942 were doubled up.
Many youth who are arrested may become homeless due to families unwillingness to allow the juvenile to return home due to family conflict or restrictions imposed by landlords or public housing authorities.
The likelihood of youth coming in contact with the justice system increases due to unstable housing. Youth exposed to extended periods of housing instability tend to engage in various survival behaviors, such as
- theft
- selling or consuming drugs
- trading sex for money, shelter or material goods.
